Choosing the best residential care environment can be challenging for the resident and their families. There are many options and each resident is unique and has distinctive preferences and needs. We have chosen many of the FAQ’s that families seeking solutions ask and have given clear and direct responses. There are, of course, many other questions that need to be addressed as you make every effort to make wise choices.

How is the quality of “Resident Life” created at Cobbdale? Are there activities and programs offered?
Cobbdale takes a holistic approach to the quality of resident life. Creating a true “warm home environment” that is positive, engaging and secure is accomplished through:
– A focus on the quality of relationships between caregivers and residents.
– The enjoyment of shared mealtimes as an experience of community.
– The quality of the food that is provided.
– The availability of varied activities and recreational experiences.
– A true and deep respect for the individual preferences, interests and needs of each individual.

Recreational activities are an important component of resident life. What a resident chooses to do with their free time is as important at age 18 or 80! Having a variety of options to choose from is important so residents can follow their inclinations of the day. Cobbdale is designed and equipped to provide a range of activity options for residents on a daily basis. These options are varied, including traditional games, arts and crafts, reading and musical outlets but also include choices like helping prepare certain foods, nature walks, gardening, outings to destinations of interest and social games and interaction.
Intellectually stimulating options are also important to the quality of life for many residents. Individual residents interests and initiatives are always encouraged and supported. If a resident wants to explore a certain type of music; we will help them do that. If a resident wants to research a particular topic of interest; we will help them do that. If a resident has a longing to experience something in particular; we will help them do that.
Relaxing ones mind and body is so very important to a satisfying day to day life at Cobbdale. We are always endeavoring to help residents find their individual ways of relaxing. It might be sipping tea on the front porch, hanging out by the fireplace or enjoying the natural beauty in the courtyard.
Televisions, telephones & cable?
Televisions are provided in common areas and each residents private room is TV and cable ready. Their is no additional cost for the resident. Phones are available for residents private use.
Can residents furnish and decorate their own rooms?
We encourage individuals to bring their own artwork, family photographs and mementos if they would like to. Personalizing one’s space is always supported and encouraged.
The private rooms come with basic tasteful furnishings. If a resident wants to bring a cherished piece of furniture or other belongings into their rooms we must first ensure that Cobbdale’s health and hygiene standards are met. We evaluate all requests on a case by case basis and make every effort to accommodate residents wishes whenever possible.
Can residents have family and friends join them for meals?
A residents family and friends are always welcome in their home for meals and visits.
How are individual differences handled at Cobbdale?
Several options are always available to residents to account for individual preferences. Meal menus for the day are displayed for residents and special requests are encouraged.
How are medications managed and provided for residents?
All medications are kept secure and oversight is provided by Certified Medication Technicians and the Executive Director. Medicines are dispensed by staff members who are certified by the State of Virginia to administer medications.
How many staff are available to take care of the residents at Cobbdale?
One unique feature in small assisted living residences, like Cobbdale, is the ability to truly care for our residents in a very personal, responsive and effective manner. During daytime hours (approximately 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.) there are 3 and at times 4 staff members assisting residents with their various needs throughout the day. In the evening and overnight there are always 2 staff members present at Cobbdale.
What is the maximum number of residents at Cobbdale?
Cobbdale is licensed by the state of Virginia to care for up to eight residents. Cobbdale accepts both male and female residents.
How experienced are the staff in elder care?
Staff are carefully selected, highly experienced and fully certified. Our Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) are carefully screened, experienced and receive ongoing supervision and training. The quality, health and competence of our “caregivers” is one of our highest priorities.
What does the admissions process involve for potential new residents?
The admissions process is an opportunity to carefully discuss the appropriateness of Cobbdale Assisted Living for an individual and their family. A careful medical history and current assessment of an individual’s needs is completed by our Care Team and the Executive Director. The overall goal is to determine if optimal care can be provided and sustained for each resident in our home. Cobbdale is designed and staffed to provide extensive care to residents as it relates to all of their activities of daily living. Assistance is also provided for such tasks as proper medication management, personal care, shopping, housekeeping, laundry and communication with family and friends. If an individual is in need of a more intensive or specialized level of care all efforts are made to assist in their appropriate referral and placement.
How are meals planned, prepared and served?
Enjoyment of fresh, healthy and varied foods is a key to optimal quality of life for our residents. Meals are prepared daily by our staff, utilizing fresh and seasonal ingredients to provide our residents with a satisfying experience at the table. Daily and weekly menus are posted and residents are encouraged to make suggestions and special requests. There are always varied choices and flexibility around where and when individual residents prefer to eat on any given day. Certain days they may be around the kitchen and eat in the breakfast nook or dining area. Other days they prefer to have certain meals in the comfortable living room or on the porch. On certain days an individual may enjoy the privacy of their own room. Eating is a central aspect of daily life at Cobbdale and every effort is made to maximize each residents enjoyment and satisfaction.
How do you coordinate with medical professionals?
The medical health and care of our residents is our highest priority. Typically residents maintain their existing medical relationships with doctors, and we support and facilitate their contact with their doctors and any other health providers.
Other residents utilize Cobbdale’s trusted network of high quality gerontologists, GCM’s and geriatric medical experts. Cobbdale’s Care Team supports and coordinates efforts to promote each residents health and longevity.
